Every time you sign up for a cloud tool, your data (customers, invoices, contracts) ends up stored on the server of a company that, more often than not, you don’t even know where it is. It works fine until the price goes up, the terms change, or it simply stops working one Tuesday morning. Data sovereignty is the principle that turns that situation around: your data is yours and lives where you decide.
What “data sovereignty” means
Data sovereignty means that your company keeps real control over its own information: where it’s stored, who accesses it, and what can be done with it. It’s not an abstract technical matter, but a business decision with very concrete consequences.
When the information lives in a third-party service under a subscription model, what happens in practice is the opposite: you accept someone else’s rules. And those rules can change without you being able to do much about it.

- No cost surprises: you don’t depend on a subscription that can spiral.
- Easier compliance: for the GDPR (the European data protection regulation) it’s much easier to demonstrate where the information is and how it’s protected.
- Freedom to switch: if one day you want to migrate to another tool, your data is already in your hands.
The role of open-source software
This is where open-source software fits in naturally. Open-source software means that you can use the program, install it wherever you want, and you’re not tied to a single company. There are very mature open-source alternatives for management, invoicing, email, file storage, or automation, and all of them can be installed on your own server.
This doesn’t mean giving up convenience. A well-built solution based on open-source software can be as easy to use as any cloud service, with the difference that control stays in your house. And if at some point you need artificial intelligence for some task, it can also run on your own data without sending it elsewhere.
Is this only for big companies?
It’s a widespread myth. Setting up your own server, properly sized for an SME, doesn’t require an IT department or a huge investment. What it requires is planning it well from the start: choosing tools that respect your autonomy and sizing the solution to your real scale, without overloading it.
